WA Over 50's - 2006 News

Friday 21st July

We gathered at the airport Wednesday morning from 6 o’clock onwards and flew out to Darwin arriving early afternoon. A truck was waiting to take the luggage and after a bit of a wait, the buses arrived and we headed to the apartments. The traffic is negligible compared to past championships and we were soon there. We have wonderful views of Cullen Bay and the marina.

Friday night we headed for the main shopping area, only 5 minutes away for dinner and to shop for supplies for the week. We split up, with both groups saying they had great meals – one at the Vietnamese, the other at the Italian restaurant.

Thursday morning we trained at 8am, arriving quite early due to the lack of traffic. The 45’s also trained and we had a scratch match for the last 10 minutes of our hour which ended up being 40 minutes. A mix up in communications meant our 35’s hadn’t been told their training session had moved from 10 back to 9.

Lunch was an all team BBQ around the pool followed by team presentations and the organising of inter team buddies. Friday evening we went to the nearby markets. These were quite busy with food and handicraft stalls mainly.

Competition started on Friday, with our 35’s first up against Queensland. We all went to support them and they played really well. They were unlucky to have a goal scored against them mid way through the second half but kept their cool and equalised for a 1 all draw.

Our game was at 6 so we couldn’t watch the 40’s game but unfortunately they lost 0-4 to NSW.

See Match Rpts for our report on this game.

We then watched the 55s who were unlucky to lose to Queensland by the single goal.

On Sunday after watching the 55s go down by 1 to NSW we headed into Shenanigan’s, an Irish pub.
The servings were generous and we all we amply satiated at the end.
It was Ev’s 55th Birthday and we had some cake to celebrate with her.
